About This Place

Big Hands is a vibrant bar & grill nestled on 296 Oxford Rd, Manchester, that effortlessly blends authentic, laid-back charm with a lively social atmosphere. Perfectly positioned as an Oxford Road institution, this spot offers a genuine muso bar vibe that appeals to both locals and visitors looking for a memorable night out.

Step inside, and you’ll find an interior that’s unpretentious and real — far from polished or pretentious, it exudes character and authenticity. Some patrons find the indoor lighting a touch dark, which adds to its moody, intimate feel. But the undeniable highlight is the stunning rooftop garden, drenched in greenery, where the atmosphere transforms into a peaceful, refreshing haven. As David Whalley notes, "Come here on a warm evening and sit in the rooftop garden with a cool beer, it’s really peaceful."

Big Hands truly shines when it comes to its impressive beverage offerings. Beer lovers will be delighted by the curated selection that includes Mexican classics like Corona (£4.50), Modelo Especial (£4.50), and Pacifico Clara (£4.50), alongside a range of remarkable German brews — from the robust Aventinus Tap 6 (£8.20) to the refreshing Erdinger Weisse (£5.30). Not to mention thoughtful deals such as four bottles of Corona, pitchers of Tuborg Lager, and multiple Jagerbomb options that keep the party flowing without breaking the bank.

Although this is primarily a bar, the modest menu surprises with flavorful bites that perfectly complement the drinks. Savour the 4 Cheese Arancini that delight with their golden crust and melty core, or indulge in vegan-friendly options like the zesty Vegan Tomato Pizza, not to mention classic favourites such as Wedges and Cheese Pizza. As Hannah Baker points out, "Rizzos pizza and arancini from the roof terrace is amazing," making these dishes a must-try before catching a gig next door.

The vibe at Big Hands is unmistakably electric yet relaxed — a place where music fuels the energy without overpowering conversation. Customers regularly praise the soundtrack for setting the perfect mood, although some suggest the volume be carefully tuned to keep the golden balance, especially in the rooftop garden. Mez of Steel’s experience sums it up perfectly: "Great vibe, staff were friendly, I'd deffo go again."

Artists and creatives will feel especially at home here. April Blakey, an art student, found the space inspiring enough to want to return with her friends to draw and soak in the crafted environment. This creative ambiance adds another layer to Big Hands that transcends a typical night out — it’s a well-rounded spot where culture, community, and conviviality intertwine.

Whether you're looking to sip on a crisp beer under the stars, enjoy a casual bite with friends, or immerse yourself in a genuine Manchester night filled with music and greenery, Big Hands offers a distinctive experience that stays true to its roots. It’s a rare find where every detail — from carefully poured drinks to that surprise rooftop food stall — comes together in effortless harmony. For the authentic, no-frills bar and grill scene on Oxford Rd, Big Hands is nothing short of a local gem.

Such a lovely place, as an art student I’ll definitely be going again. However a whisky and coke was £4 and it tasted like water, won’t get getting that again. The music was a great vibe and I’d revisit it with my art friends to draw the place because it is such a well crafted environment!

Come here on a warm evening and sit in the rooftop garden with a cool beer, it’s really peaceful. Just hope they don’t play the music too loudly and ruin the atmosphere. The inside is a bit too dark for my liking but each to their own.

Never been before, we had a sort of "wedding after-party" and this place is awesome! Great vibe, staff were friendly, I'd deffo go again. No idea on the food... We just drank on the rooftop garden!

A must-do for food and drinks before a gig next door, Rizzos pizza and arancini from the roof terrace is amazing, and Big Hands is an Oxford Rd institution and they can pour a decent Guinness.

This place is an absolute gem of a bar. The atmosphere and energy of it is magic. Sat on roof terrace which is surrounded with lots of greenery. Super cool music and vibes. Love it. The bar and decor isn't a polished fancy bar. It is real, authentic muso bar. The icing on the cake is the wee food place on the roof terrace. This was a surprise to me as I didn't know it was there. Sipping a beer in the sunshine then glance over to see pizzas and snacks. A genuine Sicilian pizza kitchen. Oh my days - food was unbelievably good. Truly restaurant quality food served and presented almost festival style. For a moment we were transported to Glastonbury ( the music, the greenery, the beer, the food ) You cannot come to Manchester without visiting this place. One of favourites for sure. Even visit just for the food. It really was incredible. Inexpensive yet very high quality. I'm just hungry for more just typing this.
